Dr. Hu Maochuan’s Defense
Dr. Hu Maochuan’s Defense has been successfully held on Feb 19, 2016.
Takara-sensei, Tachikawa-sensei, Sayama-sensei and students from our lab. have attended this defense
Dr. Hu has done his presentation with topic as “Impacts of Climate Change and Anthropogenic Activites on Catchment Water Balance and Hydrologic Exremes” and achived his doctoral degree.
We wish you success in your future career and all the best!
GSS International Cooperation Project (Han XUE)
In order to protect Georgetown (UNESCO heritage site) from flooding risk and study the effectiveness of alternative countermeasures, I have conducted an international cooperation project of GSS (Global Sustainability Study) program for a bilateral research through hydrological model simulation.
This project lasted from Feb 1st, 2015 to Nov 30th, 2015 and was in partnership with Prof. Ismail Abustan from University Sains Malaysia. This project contains material and data preparation, field work, bilateral research and results report. The results of this project has been provided as consulting references for government project and presented in Amsterdam International Water Week 2015.
2015 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco
I attended 2015 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco. This meeting is the largest conference in geophysical science including hydrology and natural hazards, with more than 23,000 oral and poster presentations!
I presented two papers, one of which is about the flood hazard mapping with a brief report on the Kinu River flooding by a poster, and the other one is on the classification of world river basins published by Fernandez and Sayama (HESS, 2015) by oral and poster. It is always nice to meet many colleagues in the conference and catch up the latest scientific progress in the field.

Dr. Bounhieng Vilaysane‘s Defense
12th Dec, 2015, Dr. Vounhieng Vilaysane’s Defense has been held and he has successfully done his presentation.
Congratulations Vilaysane!
You have achived your doctoral degree after three years and three months’ hard work.
Thanks Takara-sensei, Tachikawa-sensei, Sayama-sensei and all students for attending.
We wish you success in your future career and all the best!
The 4th Italian and Mediterranean Workshop on Landslides, and the Short Course on Landslide Processes and Land Management Effects, in Naples, Italy
The 4th Italian Workshop on Landslides (IWL2015) was held on November 23 to 25, in Centro Congressi Federico II via Partenope 36, Naples Italy. This workshop was jointly organized by the Seconda Universita di Napoli and the Universita di Napoli Federico II.
The main topic in the workshop this year is the interaction between landslides and man-made works. In addition, special session deals with the interdisciplinary studies of hydrology and soil mechanics including precipitation induced landslides, hydrological processes on hilly slope, as well as impact of climate change on landslides. Several distinguished professors were invited to give keynote speeches such as Prof. Roy Sidle (Australia), Prof. Ning Lu (USA), Prof. Fausto Guzzetti (Italia) and Prof. Claudio Margottini (Italia).
One of Takara Lab. Members, Mr. Hendy Setiawan (D2) -during his internship study in Water Resources Section of TU Delft- had a chance to deliver his research work in the workshop. His oral presentation in the session of Interaction between landslides and large infrastructures entitled ‘Initial pore pressure ratio in the earthquake triggered large-scale landslide near Aratozawa Dam in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan’.
The full papers of this workshop will be peer-reviewed and published by Elsevier in a thematic issue of Procedia Earth and Planetary Science, an open access journal indexed by ISI Web of Science.
On November 26 a short course on landslide processes and land management effects was given by Professor Roy Sidle from University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. This one day course held at Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Design, Edilizia e Ambiente of the Seconda Universita degli Studi di Napoli, located in Aversa. This course emphasized the hydrological and geomorphological factors in landslides, vegetation influences and land management practices that contribute to landslide initiation.
Study on effectiveness of phosphorescent plates (蓄光標識) in evacuation drills in Okitsu, Kochi Prefecture
On November 28, study on effectiveness of phosphorescent plates (蓄光標識) in evacuation drills has been conducted in Okitsu (興津) of Kochi Prefecture (高知県). Members from Takara Lab. (Prof. Takara, Mr. Adnan (M2, leader), Ms. Khailin (D2), Mr. Xue (D2), Mr. Toma (D1) and Miss Shi (M2) ) have participated in this study with kind support from the local residents, joint reserchers and enterprise members.
Participation in Amsterdam International Water Week Conference 2015
Four members of Takara Lab. (D2 Siska Eva Mia, D2 Chong Khai Lin, D2 Xue Han, M2 Shi Yongxue) have participated in the Amsterdam International Water Week Conference (AIWW) 2015 in Amsterdam RAI during Nov. 2 to Nov. 6.
The Amsterdam International Water Week Conference is the world’s most cross-cutting conference for integrated water solutions. The theme of this year is “Integrated Solutions for a Circular Economy and Resilient Cities”.
On Nov. 3 Mr. Xue has made oral presentation with topic “Study on flood disasters and low impact development countermeasures in Georgetown, Malaysia” in the Flood Resilient Cities session.
On Nov. 4 Ms. Chong has made oral presention with topic “Rainfall trend analysis in the Kelantan river catchment during Northeast monsoon season 1981-2014” in the Measuring and Responding to Climate Variability session
Ms. Eva has made poster presentation with topic “Tourism Impact Assessment Using Water Security Index In Tourism-dependent Region: Bali, Indonesia“.
On Nov. 5 Ms. Eva has taken the excursion of “Delta Programme AIWW Sub-conference: national and international water governance” and on Nov. 6 Ms. Chong, Miss Shi and Mr. Xue have taken the excursion of “Flood protection in Amsterdam & Rotterdam, a multi layer safety approach”. We have visited several flood prone areas of this city and studied possible multi layer safety measures for flood prevention, effect diminishing and protection of critical infrastructure.
We had meaningful communication with experts from different fields for water-related problmes solutions and got valuable experiences from the real case study of the excurisons.
